this is the guinea pig that we use for the experiment today.. we only need a small portion of its ileum for the organ bath experiment.. however it was sacrificed for its intestine

it is an important part of our understanding and development of new and old drugs. If we didnt use guinea pigs then we wouldnt get new drugs to save lifes or improve them. the use of guinea pigs is for the greater good of the human race. I have guinea pigs that I love very much. I wouldn’t want them used as, well, guinea pigs. But on the other hand We need to test out drugs and make sure they are safe. I would rather have a drug that would safe someones life and lose a few guinea pigs. Most of us eat all kinds of meat and that is no different then using animals of any kind as “guinea pigs” it is all done to make sure we survive. For everyone that is disgusted at this go out and buy as many guinea pigs as you can. That’s the only way you are going to keep them safe, if you can’t do that then don’t bother complaining about it.

It’s definitely sad to see this but it happens all the time and you just have to accept it.
I am certainly sad to see that people have responded so negatively. It gives those of us who carry on our concerns for animal’s rights a very, very bad reputation. And then, the cowardice of not even revealing their names! The disgrace. =(I am a practicing vegetarian (vegan soon, as my health permits) and I do not take any modern medication except under the most extreme circumstances. I consider working to eliminate animal testing to be a marvelous work, but only if people are willing to be considerate of others. I do not believe that animals should be put before my fellow human beings, as some animal rights advocates tend to practice.What matters the most to me in seeing this blog, is that the guinea pig was not alive. Hopefully the guinea pig was euthanized humanely, and done so BEFORE the actual experiment. Most animal testing is done with live animals that never receive any relief from the discomfort of the tests. The testing explained in this blog appears to be humane testing, and for that, I commend Zhi Yong and the others who performed this series of tests. I can only hope that the other testing by this lab is done with as much mercy. However, if I am wrong in assuming that the guinea pig was deceased prior to the test…then that is another story entirely!Still, I wish to encourage my fellow animal lovers not to protest and act as asinine and disgracefully as you have here, but to calmy and politely ask for facts, and THEN express your concerns in a way that will truly impact others. I am a colleague of Zhi Yong’s. We went to the same university and I remember conducting the same experiment 3 years ago. I can confirm that the guinea pig was euthanize in a humane manner by the lab technicians. after extracting it’s ileum for our tests, the animal was placed into the plastic bag prior to disposal. that was when Zhi yong took its photo. It was not suffocated to death, as assumed by the “animal lovers”. hence, this answers another question by blair: the animal was not alive when tested.I hope that the comments by blair will put this issue to rest. He has a point. Why curse and swear when you can put constructive comments and suggestions. If there was a better way, let us know and the purpose of science can be served.

currently, I’m studying pharmacology at we use guinea pig ileum in our practicals to test different drugs and their effects on the small intestine. I understand that people have problems with killing the guinea pigs, but to progress forward, procedures and research need to be done. The guinea pigs that we use are put to sleep, and aren’t savagely killed in anyway. And if you think that we shouldn’t use them, give me a likely alternative that can provide results that are so closely matched to humans?
It hurts me to look at this picture. I understand you do it for medicinal purposes but its life was still taken from it prematurely. I have a guineapig farm and to see a picture like this is cruel and it saddens me. Regardless of what you’re experimenting on and for what cause, photos like this are distressing.
Oh and it’s arrogant to assume that a person is uneducated just because they are passionate about their view on something.

I think when there is absolutely no other way to test a drug and it is on the level of curing cancer then it is just about OK to humanely kill a guinea pig but I don’t like it at all. I keep them as pets and therefore I know that they all have unique personalities and are much more intelligent than most people think so to me the idea of killing one is awful. I only hope that it was put to sleep in a very nice and peaceful way without any fear or distress. There is a lot of unnecessary use of guinea pigs/rabbits etc for experiments such as one for every vet student to dissect. I’m not sure if this happens everywhere but to me it’s disgraceful, let alone the use of animals for testing cosmetic products. So in summary my opinion is if it absolutely has to be done make it painless and fearless and only when absolutely 100% necessary.
I think although the medical breakthroughs that have been made through animal testing are significant, it should be replaced by all the more efficient, cheaper, and less time consuming alternatives such as cadavers, and corrositex.

I am a proud owner of a guinea pig and if you had that pig as a pet for 1 day you would have been attached to it!!! They jump on your lap and run in circles when they see you and squeak for food. I just wanted to make a suggestion. Instead of wasting time to kill a guinea pig for experiments, why not recycle? WHAT I MEAN is use guinea pigs which are sick or already dead for your experiments. For Example, ask your local animal shelters if they have any guinea pigs which they had to put down recently. Don't take a guinea pig which has been dead for a week!!! Too old! Will rot…. Anyway as I was saying, after the shelter has given you a dead guinea pig you are ready to do your experimentyay! With no killing! YAY! Hooray!

Holy crap the people commenting on this are idiots. Theres a reason we use mice and guinea pigs. Its due to the genetics and they way their body reacts to chemicals because it is very similar to ours. So you want to stop them using guinea pigs? So you would rather they killed a human to do it? Then go volunteer yourself and improve the gene pool of humanity. Without testing like this, you would have probably died from a simple cold. They dont torture the animal, hell, they dont even stab it or suffocate it. It dies peacefully in its sleep from an injection in order to not stress the tissues so they react better to the testing.

All living things are equal, you don’t seem to understand this. The fact is that it is wrong to kill a human as well as an animal, I believe we should figure out a testing solution in which no beings are harmed. We are not uneducated, we simply have a place for animals and equality in our hearts, you don’t seem to understand that concept.
